Miss Black Louisiana -Terysa Shavon Singleton to Visit The Gambia Print E-mail

Terysa Shavon Singleton visit Gambia, West Africa at the end of May to compete in the Miss Black USA pageant. A meet and greet ceremony was held in her honor on March 30 at the North Park Civic Center. Special guests included Opelousas Mayor Donald Cravins Sr., Sunset Mayor Cecil Lavergne and State Sen. Donald Cravins Jr. Singleton was presented with the keys to the city of Opelousas by the mayor and also honored with the keys to the city of Sunset, which is Singleton's birthplace.

"We are very proud of Terysa for representing the great state of Louisiana, and we know she will represent us very well. I wish her the best in her travels," said State Sen. Cravins. Singleton earned a bachelor's degree in computer science from Southern University. She has also achieved various awards including the Baton Rouge Unsung Hero Award, Habitat for Humanity community service award and the Smart Scholar of Southern University. Singleton remains highly involved in bettering the education system for Louisiana students.

"I think its wonderful we have someone from our area to serve as goodwill ambassador to Africa," said Mayor Cravins.
The meet and greet also served as a fundraiser for Singleton's approaching trip to Africa. Lavergne, who lived in Africa for ten years, added "It should be a very nice experience for her; Gambia is an extremely quite and peaceful country."

The journey for the Miss Black USA crown will begin on May 20 in Arlington, Virginia and culminate on June 1 in Gambia, West Africa. This year's pageant theme is "A Royal Journey Back to our Roots" and each contestant will be judged not only on interview, but also her knowledge of African culture.

Terysa is a Spring 2003 initiate of Alpha Tau.

Alpha Tau Mourns the Loss of Soror Lauren E. Robinson Print E-mail
Alpha Tau mourns the tragic loss of Soror Lauren E. Robinson who was murdered on Friday, August 24, 2007 in her home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. 

Funeral services for Lauren were held Saturday, September 1, 2007 at the Allen Chapel AME Church in Baton Rouge, LA.  Hundreds of family, classmates, friends, and Sorors attended Lauren's beautiful Homegoing Celebration.  She was laid to rest at Southern Memorial Gardens on Blount Rd. in Baton Rouge. 

Although Lauren's physical body is no longer with us, her spirit lives on in the hearts of the many people who knew and loved her.  She will be truly missed.

Southwest Regional Conference 2007 Print E-mail

Congratulations to Alpha Tau for winning awards at the Regional Conference in Shreveport, LA.

  • Brittany Bass and ZaKiya Ali won Colleglatic Trailbazers awards.

Brittany Bass - The New Southwest Regional Representative Print E-mail

Congratulations to Soror Brittany Bass, the recently elected 2007-2009 Southwest Regional Representative! 

This year, the 41st "Blazin" Southwest Regional Conference took place in Shreveport, LA on August 3rd - August 5th.  Soror Bass, a native of Shreveport, Louisiana, is now a Senior majoring in Political Science.  She served as the Junior Class Vice President (2006-2007), the Sophomore Class President (2005-2006), as well as other positions in the SGA for Southern University A&M College.   Soror Bass was initiated in the Alpha Tau Chapter in Spring of 2006, and she is still holding the office position as President for 2 consecutive years.  Alpha Tau is so proud to honor a dynamic young lady who excells in leadership and is willing to make a DIFFERENCE in the sorority!
